Science
Intent
At Bawnmore Infant School, our Science curriculum sparks curiosity and helps children make sense of the world around them. Through exciting investigations, outdoor exploration, and child-led inquiry, children develop key scientific knowledge and skills while building confidence in thinking, questioning and problem-solving.
Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is enriched by seasonal study, purposeful learning hooks, and hands-on experiences. Science is a powerful vehicle for promoting our golden thread—emotional wellbeing, strong relationships, and a love of learning. It also reflects our school values of curiosity, cooperation, care and resilience.
We want children to see themselves as scientists and to develop a sense of awe and respect for the natural world.
Implementation
-
In Reception, children explore seasonal change, animals, plants, materials and habitats through continuous provision and outdoor learning.
-
In Years 1 and 2, Science is taught weekly in engaging units that include plants, animals (including humans), everyday materials, and seasonal changes.
-
Learning is enquiry-led and grounded in real-life contexts, often linking to topic work.
-
Outdoor learning plays a vital role, supporting observation, questioning, and care for the environment.
-
Scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught and embedded through discussion and exploration.
-
Children work scientifically by observing, identifying, testing, classifying, recording, and explaining findings.
Impact
By the end of Year 2, children:
-
Ask thoughtful questions about the world around them
-
Work like scientists—investigating, testing, predicting and recording
-
Use scientific language to explain their thinking
-
Are confident and curious learners who approach challenges with resilience and wonder
-
Have a strong foundation in scientific skills and knowledge, ready for KS2
The golden thread is evident in the way children collaborate, show care for living things, and develop a deep sense of engagement and joy in learning.
SEND and Inclusion
Science is inclusive and accessible. Activities are adapted to support all learners, including through hands-on experiences, scaffolded observations, visual aids, and supported vocabulary. All children are given opportunities to explore and ask questions in ways that suit their individual learning styles and needs.
