Design and Technology
Intent
Design and Technology (DT) helps children learn how to solve problems by creating things that are useful and fun. At Bawnmore, it’s all about using imagination, practical skills and teamwork.
We believe in helping children become confident, curious learners—and DT supports this by letting them explore ideas and find out what works. It’s part of our school’s golden thread, helping children to feel proud, capable and supported as they learn.
Implementation
-
Children design, build and test things like moving vehicles, strong bridges, puppets and tasty snacks
-
They learn how to use tools safely and choose the right materials for the job
-
Every project includes time to plan, make, and talk about how to make things better
-
Teachers support children to be creative, solve problems and work as a team
-
Outdoor learning is included when possible—building shelters, exploring natural materials, etc.
Impact
By the end of Year 2, children:
-
Can explain their ideas and how they made them
-
Try new tools and techniques with care and confidence
-
Think about what worked and what could be improved
-
Show pride in their work and enjoy being inventive
SEND and Inclusion
DT is highly inclusive, with tasks differentiated through adult support, material selection, simplified steps or visuals. Children with SEND are encouraged to develop independence and confidence through tactile, creative learning. All pupils have access to appropriate tools and safe, hands-on experiences.
