Design and Technology

Design and Technology (DT) helps children learn how to solve problems by creating things that are useful and fun. At Bawnmore, DT is all about imagination, practical skills, and teamwork. It supports our golden thread—strong relationships, emotional wellbeing, and a love of learning—by helping children feel proud, capable, and supported as they learn.

Curriculum

Our DT curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and carefully sequenced from Early Years to Year 2. We aim for children to:

  • Explore ideas and develop creative solutions
  • Learn how to use tools safely and select appropriate materials
  • Understand the process of planning, making, and evaluating
  • Work collaboratively and build resilience through problem-solving

Projects include designing and making moving vehicles, strong bridges, puppets, and tasty snacks. Outdoor learning is incorporated wherever possible, such as building shelters and exploring natural materials.

Teaching

Teaching in DT is practical, hands-on, and focused on creativity and problem-solving. Our approach includes:

  • Structured opportunities to plan, make, and evaluate
  • Explicit teaching of tool use and material selection
  • Encouragement of teamwork and collaboration
  • Use of outdoor environments for inspiration and real-world application
  • Reflection activities to help children improve their designs

Positive relationships and high-quality interactions ensure every child feels confident to take creative risks and learn from mistakes.

Achievement

By the end of Year 2, children:

  • Can explain their ideas and how they made them
  • Use tools and techniques with care and confidence
  • Reflect on what worked and what could be improved
  • Show pride in their work and enjoy being inventive

SEND and Inclusion

DT is highly inclusive. Tasks are adapted through adult support, material selection, simplified steps, or visual prompts. Children with SEND are encouraged to develop independence and confidence through tactile, creative learning. All pupils have access to appropriate tools and safe, hands-on experiences.
