PE
Intent
At Bawnmore Infant School, we want every child to feel confident, capable, and joyful in their body. Our PE curriculum promotes physical and emotional wellbeing, teamwork, and resilience. We aim to instil a lifelong love of movement by helping children develop key physical skills, an understanding of healthy living, and the confidence to try new challenges.
PE links strongly with our REACH principles and values of cooperation, resilience, and care. Through active play, structured lessons, and outdoor experiences, we ensure every child has the opportunity to feel successful and enjoy being active.
Implementation
-
PE is taught weekly in all classes, following a progressive and inclusive curriculum.
-
In Reception, children develop gross motor skills through climbing, dance, obstacle courses, and outdoor learning.
-
In Years 1 and 2, children explore games, dance, gymnastics, yoga, and athletics, developing strength, agility, coordination, and teamwork.
-
The Daily Mile, brain breaks, yoga, and Forest School offer additional opportunities to move and strengthen mental wellbeing.
-
PE vocabulary is explicitly taught to support children in evaluating and improving their performance.
-
Lessons are carefully sequenced to build physical literacy and positive attitudes towards physical activity.
We make the most of our outdoor spaces and link PE to wider learning where possible, e.g. movement in dance linked to storytelling or teamwork in games linked to PSHE.
Impact
By the end of Year 2, our children:
-
Demonstrate key movement skills like jumping, throwing, balancing and running
-
Work well with others in games and group activities
-
Show resilience and confidence when facing new physical challenges
-
Understand how to stay healthy and active
-
Are well-prepared for continued PE and sport in junior school
PE contributes to their emotional wellbeing, sense of self, and readiness to participate in a wide range of active learning experiences beyond KS1.
SEND and Inclusion
Our inclusive PE offer ensures all children can access and enjoy movement. Lessons are adapted using visuals, simplified instructions, tailored equipment and flexible grouping. Staff provide encouragement and scaffolding so every child experiences success. We celebrate small steps of progress and ensure that all pupils—regardless of ability—develop confidence, pride and a positive relationship with being active.
