Music
Music is a huge part of life at Bawnmore. We want children to love singing, making music, and listening to sounds. Music helps children feel happy, build friendships, and grow in confidence—supporting our golden thread of strong relationships, emotional wellbeing, and a love of learning.
Curriculum
Our music curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and carefully sequenced from Early Years to Year 2. We aim for children to:
- Enjoy singing and making music
- Explore rhythm, pitch, and sound creatively
- Learn about music from different cultures and traditions
- Build confidence through performance and collaboration
We follow the Charanga scheme, which provides structured progression in singing, playing instruments, and listening skills.
Teaching
Teaching in music is practical, joyful, and rooted in creativity. Our approach includes:
- Weekly music lessons using Charanga
- Singing, clapping rhythms, and playing tuned and untuned instruments
- Exploring sounds and creating simple compositions
- Learning about music from around the world
- Music integrated into assemblies, celebrations, and performances
- In Reception, music is taught through play, movement, and exploration
Positive relationships and high-quality interactions ensure every child feels confident to join in and express themselves musically.
Achievement
By the end of Year 2, children:
- Sing confidently and keep a steady beat
- Play instruments with control and creativity
- Talk about music and how it makes them feel
- Are ready to enjoy more music in junior school
SEND and Inclusion
Music is accessible to all learners. Tasks are adapted so every child can participate and feel proud of their musical learning. We value effort, enjoyment, and expression over perfection.
