History
Intent
Our history curriculum helps children understand the past and how it influences the present. At Bawnmore, we encourage pupils to ask questions, make connections and develop a sense of identity and chronology. We want them to see themselves as part of history and develop curiosity about people and events from different times.
Our values of honesty, respect and resilience are reflected in how we explore different viewpoints, challenge misconceptions and learn from the past. History supports our REACH principles by encouraging critical thinking, respectful enquiry and deep reflection.
Implementation
-
History is taught through engaging topics such as significant people, events and changes over time.
-
In Reception, history learning happens through discussion about family, change, past and present.
-
In KS1, children explore events like the Great Fire of London, the history of toys, significant monarchs and local history including castles.
-
Learning is brought to life through role-play, artefacts, storytelling, themed days and visits from historians.
-
We teach children to use historical vocabulary and begin to understand chronology with timelines and sequencing.
Impact
By the end of KS1, children can:
-
Talk about significant historical figures and events
-
Understand and use the language of time (past, present, before, after)
-
Compare aspects of life in different periods
-
Ask thoughtful questions and express their ideas
-
Recognise the impact of past events on their lives today
SEND and Inclusion
History is made accessible through visual timelines, storytelling, role play and multisensory learning. We use real-life links, photos, artefacts and videos to engage all learners. Support staff help scaffold discussions, and adaptations ensure that all children can access core knowledge and develop historical understanding.
