PSHE and RSE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) underpin everything we do at Bawnmore. These subjects equip children with the knowledge, skills, and emotional literacy to understand themselves, build positive relationships, and live healthy, safe lives. They are a vital part of our golden thread—strong relationships, emotional wellbeing, and a love of learning—and reflect our REACH principles and school values: cooperation, respect, resilience, honesty, care, and forgiveness.

Curriculum

Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 2. We aim for children to:

  • Understand and manage their feelings
  • Build positive friendships and resolve simple conflicts
  • Know how to keep themselves safe and healthy
  • Respect differences and begin to understand diversity and inclusion
  • Develop confidence, resilience, and strong moral values

We follow the Jigsaw scheme, which provides a spiral curriculum that revisits key themes such as relationships, health, safety, rights, and responsibilities.

Teaching

Teaching in PSHE and RSE is interactive, reflective, and embedded throughout school life. Our approach includes:

  • Weekly PSHE lessons in all year groups, including Reception
  • Use of Protective Behaviours and Zones of Regulation from the start of Reception
  • Strategies such as circle time, role play, discussion, and storytelling
  • Cross-curricular links with subjects like RE, PE, and English
  • Staff modelling respectful, kind behaviour every day
  • Age-appropriate RSE in line with statutory guidance, focusing on families, friendships, and keeping safe

Positive relationships and high-quality interactions ensure children feel safe and confident to share ideas and ask questions.

Achievement

By the end of Key Stage 1, children:

  • Understand and talk about their feelings and those of others
  • Recognise what makes a good friend and how to solve simple conflicts
  • Know how to keep themselves safe and healthy, both physically and emotionally
  • Respect differences and begin to understand diversity and inclusion
  • Are emotionally prepared to move on to KS2 and face future challenges

The golden thread is evident in their ability to form secure relationships, show empathy, and value themselves and others.

SEND and Inclusion

PSHE and RSE are tailored to meet the needs of all learners. Adaptations include:

  • Visual prompts, emotion charts, and simplified language
  • Social stories and role play to support understanding
  • Responsive planning informed by pupil voice
  • Scaffolded support to ensure every child can participate and succeed

Full details of our PSHE and RSE curriculum can be found in our PSHE and RSE Curriculum Document.
