Mathematics
Mathematics is a vital life skill and a key part of our curriculum. At Bawnmore, we want every child to see themselves as a mathematician—confident, curious, and ready to solve problems. Our maths curriculum is designed to build strong foundations in number, develop reasoning skills, and foster a positive attitude towards maths.
Curriculum
Our mathematics curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and carefully sequenced from Early Years to Year 2. A golden thread runs through everything we do—strong relationships, emotional wellbeing, and a sense of belonging—because we know these are essential for confident learning.
We aim for children to:
- Develop fluency in number facts and calculations
- Understand mathematical concepts and apply them in different contexts
- Reason and explain their thinking clearly
- Approach problem-solving with confidence and resilience
We follow the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and use the Mastering Number programme to strengthen number sense and fluency. Maths is taught through practical, visual, and written methods to ensure deep understanding.
Teaching
Teaching in maths is active, engaging, and focused on mastery. Our approach includes:
- Daily Mastering Number sessions to secure number bonds and mental strategies
- Structured lessons that build fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills
- Use of concrete resources (counters, cubes, bead strings) and pictorial representations before moving to abstract concepts
- Opportunities for children to explain their thinking and use mathematical vocabulary
- Regular practice of key skills through games, challenges, and real-life contexts
- Continuous assessment to identify gaps and provide timely support
Positive relationships and high-quality interactions ensure every child feels confident and supported in their learning.
Achievement
By the end of Year 2, children:
- Have secure knowledge of number facts and basic calculations
- Can solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Understand and use mathematical language to explain their reasoning
- Apply maths confidently across the curriculum and in everyday situations
Above all, they leave Bawnmore with confidence in their mathematical ability and a positive attitude towards learning.
SEND and Inclusion
We ensure all children succeed in maths through:
- Use of practical resources and visual supports
- Scaffolded tasks and adapted challenges
- Targeted interventions for number fluency and reasoning
- Opportunities for pre-teaching and overlearning where needed
