Computing
Computing is an essential skill for life in the modern world. At Bawnmore, we want children to use technology confidently, creatively, and safely. Our computing curriculum introduces key skills in coding, digital creativity, and online safety, while promoting problem-solving and logical thinking.
Curriculum
Our computing curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 2. A golden thread runs through everything we do—strong relationships, emotional wellbeing, and a sense of belonging—because we know these are vital for children to feel safe and confident when using technology.
We aim for children to:
- Understand how to stay safe online
- Develop basic coding and problem-solving skills
- Create digital content such as pictures, posters, and animations
- Build confidence in using technology for learning and creativity
We follow the Purple Mash scheme, which provides structured progression in coding, typing, and digital design.
Teaching
Teaching in computing is practical, engaging, and focused on real-world application. Our approach includes:
- Use of laptops and iPads for hands-on learning
- Interactive lessons that teach coding, typing, and digital creativity
- Regular online safety sessions, including the ‘Stop. Close. Tell.’ strategy
- Clear explanation of vocabulary and concepts through modelling and games
- Opportunities for exploration and problem-solving in a supportive environment
Positive relationships and high-quality interactions ensure children feel confident and safe when using technology.
Achievement
By the end of Year 2, children:
- Know how to stay safe online and make sensible choices
- Can give instructions to a computer and solve simple coding problems
- Create their own digital work, such as posters and animations
- Are ready to build on their computing skills in junior school
SEND and Inclusion
Computing is accessible to all learners. Adaptations include:
- Visual prompts and demonstrations
- Small-group support for confidence and skill development
- Scaffolded tasks and step-by-step guidance
