Curriculum
Our Curriculum at Bawnmore Community Infant School
At Bawnmore, our curriculum is built around the belief that every child deserves an education that excites, empowers and equips them for the future. From our youngest learners in Cygnets Pre-School through to the confident Year 2 children ready for junior school, our curriculum is carefully crafted to ensure progression, continuity and high expectations at every stage.
Our aim is simple:
To develop children who are happy, independent, resilient and ready—ready to learn, ready for the next stage of education, and ready to thrive in the wider world.
This is brought to life through our whole-school mission:
Be Ready. Always Respectful. Working Together Safely.
These values underpin the way we learn, play and grow together, creating a community where every child feels seen, supported and celebrated.
Everything we do is underpinned by the Bilton Community Federation REACH principles. We strive to ensure that every child is:
- Resilient – able to navigate challenge and change with confidence
- Emotionally Literate – aware of and able to manage their own emotions and show empathy for others
- Aspirational – excited by learning, ambitious for themselves and others
- Communicators – articulate, thoughtful and able to express their ideas clearly
- Happy – nurtured, supported and celebrated for who they are
Intent
Our curriculum is designed with clear intent: to provide a rich, inclusive and ambitious education that builds knowledge, skills and character. A golden thread runs through every stage of our curriculum—from Cygnets to Year 2—anchored in our belief that strong relationships, emotional wellbeing and a sense of belonging are the foundation for all learning. This thread ensures a consistent, child-centred approach that promotes curiosity, independence and high aspirations.
Across every year group, we nurture children’s natural curiosity while laying strong foundations in reading, writing, maths, and the wider curriculum. Carefully chosen key texts, memorable learning experiences and a values-driven ethos help children make sense of the world and their place within it, while developing the personal qualities they need to flourish.
Implementation
From the moment children join Cygnets, they are welcomed into a caring and stimulating environment where learning is playful, purposeful and tailored to their needs. As they move through Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, teaching becomes increasingly structured to reflect their growing capabilities—while remaining engaging, active and responsive.
Our curriculum is enhanced through:
- Emotionally rich stories and themes that deepen understanding
- Outdoor learning and real-life experiences that bring the curriculum to life
- ‘Wow!’ moments and trips that create lasting memories
- Carefully sequenced knowledge that builds year-on-year
- Consistent, high-quality teaching from a dedicated and experienced team
Positive relationships and high-quality interactions are at the heart of our practice. We know our children well and tailor learning to ensure they are challenged, supported and celebrated every step of the way.
Impact
By the end of Year 2, our pupils leave Bawnmore as confident learners and kind citizens, well-prepared for the transition to junior school and life beyond. They have secure foundations in core subjects, a growing understanding of the wider world, and the social and emotional skills needed to flourish.
Our children are:
- Articulate, curious and creative thinkers
- Resilient and reflective learners
- Empathetic friends and active members of their community
Above all, they leave Bawnmore with a love of learning that will stay with them for life.
We are proud of our curriculum and the nurturing environment we provide.
Bawnmore Infant School is more than just a place to learn—it’s a place where children grow, belong and believe in themselves.
