Year Two
Ready for the next step in learning.
Year 2 is a significant stage in your child’s primary journey—a time for deepening skills, developing independence, and preparing confidently for the move to junior school. At Bawnmore, we build on the strong foundations laid in Early Years and Year 1, supporting children to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.
Curriculum
Our Year 2 curriculum is ambitious, broad, and carefully sequenced to ensure children make strong progress across all subjects. A golden thread runs through everything we do—strong relationships, emotional wellbeing, and a sense of belonging—because we know these are the foundations for success.
We follow the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1, helping children develop essential knowledge and skills in:
- English – reading fluently, writing for different purposes, developing grammar and spelling
- Mathematics – mastering number facts, calculations, shapes, measures, and reasoning
- Science – exploring the natural world through enquiry and investigation
- History and Geography – learning about the past, different places, and cultures
- Art, Design & Technology – expressing ideas and solving real-life problems
- Computing – understanding technology and staying safe online
- Music – singing, composing, and listening to a range of styles
- PE – developing agility, coordination, and healthy habits
- RE and PSHE – exploring big questions, world faiths, and building confidence, respect, and emotional literacy
Children also take part in daily Mastering Number sessions and weekly Rainbow Challenges, promoting independence and reinforcing key skills.
Teaching
Teaching in Year 2 is active, engaging, and increasingly ambitious. We combine structured whole-class lessons with opportunities for hands-on experiences, themed activities, and outdoor learning. Teachers use high-quality interactions, rich conversations, and well-planned activities to ensure every child is challenged and supported.
Children are encouraged to:
- Complete more extended pieces of work
- Take part in structured group tasks and whole-class lessons
- Reflect on their own learning and make improvements
- Tackle more complex challenges across the curriculum
Exciting topic questions such as “What is life like in the African Savannah?” or “How can ordinary people change the world?” bring subjects together and make learning meaningful. Special events—WOW days, trips, visitors, and performances—create lasting memories.
Achievement
By the end of Year 2, our pupils are:
- Secure in key skills of reading, writing, and maths
- Independent, resilient, and ready for challenge
- Curious and creative thinkers who ask thoughtful questions
- Proud of their progress and prepared for junior school
Above all, they leave Year 2 with confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.
