PE

At Bawnmore, we want every child to feel confident, capable, and joyful in their body. Our Physical Education (PE) curriculum promotes physical and emotional wellbeing, teamwork, and resilience. It supports our golden thread—strong relationships, emotional wellbeing, and a love of learning—by helping children develop confidence, pride, and a positive attitude towards movement.

Curriculum

Our PE curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and carefully sequenced from Early Years to Year 2. We aim for children to:

  • Develop fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, and balancing
  • Build strength, agility, coordination, and teamwork
  • Understand the importance of healthy living and active lifestyles
  • Approach physical challenges with confidence and resilience

PE links strongly with our REACH principles and school values of cooperation, resilience, and care.

Teaching

Teaching in PE is active, engaging, and focused on enjoyment and progression. Our approach includes:

  • Weekly PE lessons following a progressive and inclusive curriculum
  • In Reception: gross motor development through climbing, dance, obstacle courses, and outdoor play
  • In Years 1 and 2: games, dance, gymnastics, yoga, and athletics to build physical literacy
  • Additional opportunities for movement through The Daily Mile, brain breaks, yoga, and Forest School
  • Explicit teaching of PE vocabulary to support reflection and improvement
  • Lessons carefully sequenced to build confidence and positive attitudes towards physical activity

We make the most of our outdoor spaces and link PE to wider learning where possible—for example, dance linked to storytelling or teamwork linked to PSHE.

Achievement

By the end of Year 2, children:

  • Demonstrate key movement skills like jumping, throwing, balancing, and running
  • Work well with others in games and group activities
  • Show resilience and confidence when facing new physical challenges
  • Understand how to stay healthy and active
  • Are well-prepared for continued PE and sport in junior school

PE contributes to emotional wellbeing, self-confidence, and readiness to participate in a wide range of active learning experiences beyond KS1.

SEND and Inclusion

Our inclusive PE offer ensures all children can access and enjoy movement. Adaptations include:

  • Visual prompts and simplified instructions
  • Tailored equipment and flexible grouping
  • Scaffolded support to ensure success and confidence

We celebrate small steps of progress and ensure every child develops pride and a positive relationship with being active.
