Speaking and Listening
Intent
Speaking and listening are at the core of learning at Bawnmore.
We know that confident communication underpins success in reading, writing and all areas of learning. Our curriculum is designed to provide rich and varied opportunities for children to develop their verbal skills, broaden their vocabulary, listen carefully to others, and express themselves clearly, both in and out of the classroom.
Implementation
- Talk is embedded throughout the curriculum through class discussions, talk partners, debates, drama, role play and performance.
- Teachers model high-quality language and sentence structures, using scaffolding and sentence stems to support all learners.
- Vocabulary development is central to our curriculum, with explicit teaching of new words and opportunities to practise and apply them in context.
- Children regularly share their ideas through class assemblies, school council, performances, presentations and collaborative learning.
- Speaking and listening skills are carefully planned for and revisited across all subject areas to ensure children apply them confidently in a range of contexts.
Impact
- Children speak clearly, confidently and respectfully to a range of audiences.
- They listen carefully, respond appropriately, and build positive relationships through communication.
- Children are able to express their ideas, feelings and opinions, using a rich and varied vocabulary.
