Writing

Intent

At Bawnmore, we aim for all children to see themselves as writers. Our writing curriculum is built around high-quality texts, purposeful writing opportunities and clear progression in the skills of composition, spelling, grammar and handwriting. We want children to write confidently for a range of audiences and purposes, using their growing knowledge of language, structure and style.

Implementation

  • Writing sequences draw on Talk for Writing strategies, supporting children to immerse themselves in stories through roleplay, story mapping and oral rehearsal, helping them internalise language patterns and story structures.

  • Our teaching is further enriched through use of Power of Reading teaching approaches and sequences, a research-based resource that uses high-quality texts to develop reading comprehension, writing composition, and a love of literature.
  • High-quality core texts are carefully selected to link with wider curriculum topics, reflecting children’s interests and promoting diverse and inclusive experiences.
  • Genres are revisited and developed each year, including stories, poetry, letters, recounts, instructions, non-chronological reports and persuasive writing.
  • Spelling is taught through a combination of phonics (Floppy’s Phonics), spelling rules (Spelling Shed resources), word banks and multisensory approaches.
  • Handwriting is taught through the Letter-Join scheme, building fluency and legibility across the key stages.
  • Children develop their writing through regular opportunities for oral rehearsal, shared writing, live feedback, editing and self-assessment.
  • Writing opportunities are integrated across all areas of the curriculum, allowing children to apply their skills in meaningful contexts.

Impact

  • Children develop stamina for writing and take pride in their written work.
  • They write with confidence, accuracy and increasing independence.
  • Pupils can adapt their writing for different audiences, purposes and genres.
  • Writing becomes a tool for communication across the curriculum and beyond.

SEND and Inclusion

At Bawnmore, we believe that every child is a writer. As part of our inclusive approach, we ensure that all children can access the writing curriculum and experience success. High-quality universal provision is in place to support pupils with additional needs, including:

  • Use of word banks, sentence stems and oral rehearsal to support vocabulary and sentence construction
  • Visual prompts and immersive, hands-on experiences to give writing real purpose and context
  • Writing slopes, coloured paper, wider ruled lines and pencil grips to support fine motor development and handwriting
  • Opportunities to record ideas in alternative ways such as drawing, scribing or voice recording when appropriate
  • Carefully modelled examples and scaffolded tasks that allow all learners to participate and make progress

We prioritise inclusive, purposeful learning experiences that build confidence, independence and enjoyment in writing for every child.
