Starting school is a big step, and at Bawnmore we make sure it’s a happy, exciting, and nurturing one. Our Early Years team are experts in supporting young children, creating a warm, welcoming environment where every child feels safe, valued, and ready to learn.
Curriculum
Our Reception curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and carefully sequenced to build strong foundations for future learning. A golden thread runs through everything we do—strong relationships, emotional wellbeing, and a sense of belonging—because we know these are the roots of success.
We follow the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which sets out seven areas of learning:
- Prime Areas: Communication & Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social & Emotional Development
- Specific Areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts & Design
These areas are taught through purposeful play, inspiring themes, and high-quality texts. Our curriculum nurtures curiosity and independence while developing essential skills in reading, writing, and maths.
Teaching
Teaching in Reception is active, engaging, and tailored to each child. We combine structured sessions with continuous provision that encourages exploration and creativity. Teachers use rich conversations, well-planned activities, and individual support to ensure every child makes strong progress.
Children learn through:

- Rainbow Challenges that promote independence and problem-solving
- Inspiring books and exciting themes
- Special events, visitors, and trips that bring learning to life

By the end of Reception, our children are:

- Secure in early reading, writing, and number skills
- Independent, resilient, and ready for the next stage of their journey
Above all, they leave Reception with a love of learning that will stay with them for life.
