Geography
Intent
At Bawnmore Infant School, we aim to spark curiosity about the world around us. Our geography curriculum encourages children to explore their local area and wider world, building knowledge about places, people, environments, and how they are connected.
We help children develop a sense of belonging and responsibility for the planet. Our approach is rooted in outdoor exploration, meaningful enquiry, and our school values—especially respect, care and honesty. Geography supports our REACH principles by encouraging children to think critically, ask questions, and consider different perspectives.
Implementation
- Children explore key geographical concepts such as place, space, human and physical features, and maps.
- In Reception, geography is embedded in Understanding the World: exploring seasons, homes, habitats and celebrations from around the world.
- In Years 1 and 2, children explore topics such as local area fieldwork, hot and cold climates, the UK and the world, and land use.
- We use a spiral curriculum, building on knowledge from EYFS to deepen understanding.
- Regular use of maps, atlases, digital resources and fieldwork strengthens learning.
- Our outdoor environment is used to support real-world geography, including orienteering, mapping trails and weather observations.
Impact
By the end of KS1, our pupils:
- Know and can name key geographical features
- Understand similarities and differences between places
- Use maps and basic fieldwork skills confidently
- Can talk about how we care for the environment
- Are curious, reflective, and confident to explore the world around them
SEND and Inclusion
Geography is made accessible to all learners through practical experiences, visual supports, and adult modelling. Fieldwork is designed to be hands-on and inclusive. We encourage every child to share their own experiences and ideas, celebrating different cultural backgrounds and connections to the world.
